  8. How to begin the description of this package...
  9.  
  10. What you get with `AmiWeb2C.lha' is a stripped excerpt of the complete and
  11. completely new `TeX' system, ported to the Amiga over the last two months.
  12. Due to its total size of more than 30 megabytes of installed material,
  13. I decided to exclude everything that is publicly available either in the
  14. AmiNet or more likely in the CTAN, so in addition to this archive you will
  15. have to fetch several other packages before you can start for real.  Though
  16. this certainly is a major inconvenience, I just can't include everything
  17. I've collected and installed over the last four years.  My active ftp
  18. access is far too slow for such a pile of material.
  19.  
  20. So why should you want to fetch `AmiWeb2C.lha' at all?  Because it contains
  21. the latest in TeXnical development, first of all the programs TeX 3.14159,
  22. MetaFont 2.718, BibTeX 0.99c, and MetaPost 0.63.  All these programs and
  23. their associated utilities were ported directly from the Web2C-6.1 system
  24. and make use of Karl Berry's `KPathSea' library for recursive path search
  25. just as the UNIX-TeX distribution.  In addition to this, a new `TeX
  26. Directory Structure' is introduced in this archive, following the proposal
  27. by the international `TeX Users Group'.  The elements coming with this
  28. archive are automatically installed at the appropriate places by extracting
  29. the contents with the command
  30.  
  31.    > lha x -a AmiWeb2C.lha TeXMF:
  32.  
  33. Slightly more than 3 megabytes will be extracted to the root directory
  34. `TeXMF:', either `assign'ed or a partition of your harddisk.  Everything
  35. else has to be added in the directory structure below this top level.
  36.  
  37. The bulk of `AmiWeb2C.lha' consists of the binaries for all programs
  38. created out of the original Web2C sources.  Again, due to the final size
  39. of the `bin/web2c61' subdirectory (around 2.2 megabytes), I decided to
  40. include only one version of the binaries.  Your Amiga will have to provide
  41. a 68020 processor to make use of most of these programs.  If you really
  42. want to use this `TeX' system on 68000 Amigas, contact me at one of the
  43. addresses at the end of this text.

  45. The UNIX syntax for directories makes it necessary that you have a tool
  46. like Martin Scott's `UnixDirsII' installed.  You can find it in the AmiNet
  47. in the directory `/util/shell'.
  48.  
  49. The minor rest consists of all sources I've written for the Amiga port
  50. and of the configuration files necessary for a working installation.  An
  51. extensive overview of the `TeX' system currently installed on my machine
  52. can be found in the file `doc/web2c61/TeXMF.contents'.  You should read
  53. this file to get some ideas where to install the other bits and pieces.
  54. Or, if you have a working `TeX' system available, you can print the file
  55. `doc/tds/tds.dvi' for a detailed description of the new `TeX Directory
  56. Structure' used in this distribution.  All programs in this distribution
  57. assume that there exists a top-level directory `TeXMF:' containing the
  58. directory structure of this archive.  This may either be an `assign'ed
  59. name or the name of a harddisk partition.

  62. Let me begin with a list of InterNet locations, where the basic elements
  63. necessary for a working setup can be found.  What `AmiNet' is, should be
  64. fairly clear, but `CTAN' may need some extra words.  The `Comprehensive
  65. TeX Archive Network' consists of three major hosts at `ftp.dante.de'
  66. (Germany), `ftp.shsu.edu' (USA), and `ftp.tex.ac.uk' (UK), containing
  67. everything for TeX and its friends.
  68.  
  69. TeX developers who want to start all from scratch should consult the file
  70. `/source/web2c-6.1/README.AMIGA' about where to find the necessary stuff
  71. and about how to install the complete `TeX' system with SAS/C++ 6.55.
  72.  
  73. The original sources for TeX and MetaFont can be found at Professor Knuth's
  74. home server at `labrea.stanford.edu' or at one of the CTAN servers or a
  75. mirror thereof at `CTAN:/tex-archive/systems/knuth'.  Most likely, you will
  76. have to fetch `plain.tex', `plain.mf', and the `Computer Modern Fonts' as
  77. a starter.  To create the complete set of `TFM' files for this standard
  78. font collection, install the MF sources according to `TeXMF.contents' and
  79. execute the script `MakeTeXFont.cm'.
  80.  
  81. The LaTeX system can be found at `CTAN:/tex-archive/macros/latex' and has
  82. to be installed according to the description in /doc/web2c61/amiweb2c.txt'.
  83. Additional macros lie at `CTAN:/tex-archive/macros', additional fonts at
  84. `CTAN:/tex-archive/fonts'.

  86. Oren Patashnik's BibTeX system with the standard collection of style files 
  87. can be found at `CTAN:/tex-archive/biblio/bibtex'.

  89. Pehong Chen's MakeIndex system lies at `CTAN:/tex-archive/indexing'.
  90.  
  91. John Hobby's MetaPost system lies at `CTAN:/tex-archive/graphics/metapost'.
  92. It comes with a full documentation of this new system.

  95. This distribution does not come with any DVI drivers for previewing and
  96. printing your documents.  But as you can see from the `pastex' directory,
  97. it is very convenient to use Georg He{ss}mann's ShowDVI and DVIprint
  98. programs.  Look at the file `TeXMF.contents' file for details.  Also
  99. other DVI drivers can easily be added to the `AmiWeb2C' installation.
